Best place to start for learning embroidery?

I've collected Vintage Embroidery pieces for years. I love it.
My daughter has an upcoming surgery in August, and I'd love a basic project to keep me busy during her hospital stay. I'll be spending a lot of time just sitting with her, so I thought this would be good.
Where should I start? What's a good beginner project? I've cross stitched before, but that's about it.
I want a smaller, basic stitch kind of a project.
Oh, I also love silk ribbon embroidery, so that would be a thought as well.

If you are a beginner try a Klutz book. They have great step by step photos.
Get books from your library that show all the different embroidery stitches.
There are pre-printed projects too. Like napkins and pillowcases. These are getting harder to find. Try Wal Mart and craft stores.
