Childrens book. I've spent years trying to figure out what this book was called!?

I had lots of books when I was younger and still have most of them. Years back I lost one book. It was about a little boy who lived in Africa. His whole village was scared of a hippo but the boy became friends with him. Some hunters tried to kill the hippo but the boy protected him and they ran away together at night. I remember a few photos from the book, one was the boy standing in front of the hippo when the hunters tried to shoot, another was the little boy floating in the water.
The book drawings were close to the same style as Ezra Jack Keats. The book had to have been published before 1983. I have searched all the vintage online bookstores and nothing strikes me as being very familiar. Does anyone remember this book? Or know a title or author?

No, it wasn't Boloji and Old Hippo. I have come across that book many times in my search. I have also looked at the big cross reference book at my library and it isn't in there either.

Here's a possibility: Babette Cole, "Nungu and the Hippopotamus" (McGraw-Hill, 1978): A young African boy living in a remote village where water is scarce goes on a journey to make a river reappear.
